Conversion practices are abuse. No one should be told they can't be who they are, or love who they love. LGBT+ identities are diverse and should be celebrated, and yet attempts to change and suppress them are causing profound suffering to LGBT+ people across the UK.
In June, after eight years of promises from successive governments, the UK Government finally published a draft Bill to ban conversion practices in England and Wales. A Joint Committee of MPs and peers is now scrutinising it, and is due to report in January. Its recommendations will shape the law that Parliament votes on.
This is our chance to make sure the ban is robust and inclusive, protects everyone at risk, and has no loopholes.
As humanists, we support a ban because we believe in the dignity of everyone. Conversion practices undermine that basic dignity by denying someone their identity.
