Dear Prime Minister,I urge you to take action to end the suffering caused to women living in Northern Ireland by the near total prohibition on abortion.
On 25 May voters in the Republic of Ireland voted overwhelmingly to repeal the controversial eighth amendment to the constitution. This amendment forced an average of ten women and girls a day to leave the country to receive adequate medical care, causing them unnecessary expense, delays, anguish, and medical complications.
The result has made the restriction on free, safe, and legal access to abortion in Northern Ireland even more untenable than it was before.
Current restrictions force women to either travel to Great Britain to receive treatment, risk prosecution for procuring illegal abortion pills, or continue their pregnancies against their wishes and in violation of their rights.
Please bring forward legislation to end the current restrictions on abortion and to allow MPs to vote freely on this issue.
