Holy Redundant: Remove Bishops from Parliament

Holy Redundant: Remove bishops from Parliament

The House of Lords remains a place of entrenched privileged access to Parliament for bishops of the Church of England. Having any reserved places for bishops in Parliament is unjust. Britain is a country distinguished by its diversity of belief. To grant privileged access to Parliament to one religious group is an affront to the principles of democracy and equal citizenship.

Despite proposals for reform and a new Lords Reform Act (2014) that allows the resignation of peers, Anglican Bishops continue to sit in the House of Lords, they continue to have the right to vote and debate, they continue to have undue influence over our national way of life. They will have acquired these privileges by virtue of their religion, gender and position in the hierarchy of one denomination of one Church.

WRITE TO YOUR MP NOW AND URGE THEM TO OBJECT TO THE RETENTION OF THE LORDS SPIRITUAL IN A REFORMED CHAMBER.

Together, we can achieve real, lasting and fair reform of the House of Lords.

Let your MP know that you think there is no good reason to keep reserved seats for Church of England bishops in a reformed House of Lords.

We’ve put some suggested text for an email to your local MP in the box below – please feel free to edit and add to it as you wish.
